An Homage to w.H. aUDEN's poem
She looked over his shoulder
For vines and olive trees,
Marble well-governed cities
And ships upon untamed seas,
But there on the shining metal
His hands had put instead
An artificial wilderness
And a sky like lead.
The story
In this gripping, verse-driven retelling of Greek myth, Antonio Teodoro reexamines the legend of Achilles through the eyes of the mother who tried to save him.
When Thetis grants her son invincibility, she believes she is protecting him from a brutal world. Instead, she may be unleashing something far more dangerous. As war with Troy unfolds, Achilles’ god-given armor shields his body—but cannot shield his soul. What begins as a mother’s act of love spirals into a searing exploration of vengeance, power, and the unintended consequences of trying to outwit fate.
By turns poetic, intimate, and devastating, The Shield of Achilles transforms an epic tale into a powerful meditation on love, war, and the cost of making a hero.
